Context:
This artifact was constructed in Fall 2001 at Appalachian
State University in CI 3850 (Integrating Media and Technology into Teaching)
as a teacher's resourc e. For this project, I chose an object from
a conglomeration of strange looking tools, and without knowing their real
purpose, decided on a new purpose for the object. I used Adobe
Photoshop to edit the pictures, and using Netscape Communicator, I created
a web page for teachers, students, and a web site for the artifact itself.
Impact:
This web site can be used as a source for myself
or other teachers to gain creat ive ideas to implement in their classroom.
This project meets so many North Carolina Standard Course of Study competencies
(all of which are listed on the web page) that it would be a shame for
a teacher not to use it. If and when a teacher does decide to do
it, the web site is laid out for easy access for themselves and their students.
An example of the project is also included. This artifact demonstrates
my ability and practice with web page development. Since I feel so
comfortable producing a web page, I will be very willing and apt to communicate
with my students' parents and colleagues in this way.
Alignment:
This artifact demonstrates competency IIIA
because it enables me to address curricular standards using technology.
By developing this activity and doing it myself, I am comfortable in performing
the exercise with my students, enabling my students to meet sta ndards
such as Language Arts, Information Skills, and Computer Skills competencies
through technology. This standard also stresses critical thinking
and creative work through technology. Standard IIID
is also met by the completion of this artifact. The student
page of this web site helps students manage their use of precious technology
time by laying out instr uctions for them in a step by step process and
providing them with outside sources, besides the teacher, to go to for
help maximizing student learning in this technology enhanced environment
(IIE)..
Assessment of our students is a major factor we, as teachers, have to account
for. In this artifact, I use a variety of approaches to assess students
(IVA).
The students' web site (technology skills), writing sk ills, and creativity
skills are just a few of the products being assessed in this artifact.
All of these skills will need individual assessment, and therefore, require
different assessment techniques. Feedback on presentation, delivery,
and quality of their product will be given via email. Children may
be recorded on video camera as well during their presentation to allow
them opportunity to critique themselves. These methods, as well as
others, ensure children are recei ving assessment through technology in
a variety of ways. Not only does this product use technology for
assessment, but it also allows students to have their technology skills
assessed. Students are asked to use digital cameras, Photoshop, and
Netscape Navigator (all technology) in order to complete this task.
Since they will be using these methods, they will be available for you
to evaluate them (IVC).
Technology Competency VD
is also met using this artifact because I am using this web page to communicate
with colleagues and students. Knowing how to do this will benefit
me because I will be able to use this form of communication as I continue
in my teaching career with other teachers, students, and of course parents.
This project uses the web to communicate instructions for students.
By providing this media communication, teachers foster inquiry, collaboration,
and supportive interaction i n the classroom (INTASC
#6). |
