WHERE NOW? WHERE TO? THE DISPLACED
"The Jews suddenly faced themselves....They saw that they were different
from all other inmates of the camp. For them things were not so simple.
To go back to Poland? To Hungary? To streets empty of Jews, towns empty
of Jews, a world without Jews. To wander in those lands, lonely, homeless,
always the tragedy before one's eyes...and to meet again a Gentile neighbor
who would open his eyes wide and smile, remarking with double meaning 'What,
Yankel! You're still alive.'" Meyer Levin, Author, June 1946
Young Survivors of the Holocaust
a sixth grade unit using the
Literature Circles format
Dinah Cuthbertson and Marilyn Swofford
This unit is designed to use many
genres of books for 6th grade children to enjoy from picture books such
as The Faithful Elephants and Rosa Blanche , to biographies
and historical fiction such as The Diary of Anne Frank, and
The
Upstairs Room, also poetry such as I Never Saw Another Butterfly.
We chose the book After the War by Carol Matas from this unit to
model all the jobs in the teaching of literature circles. Our hope is that
others will choose books from our bibliography to use in literature circles
and possibly add their questions to our unit.
