Fifth Grade
Section 2, pages:  35-65

Discussion Director:

Your job is to make five questions that deal with section two.  Your questions should include one about a character's actions, a prediction question, a fact/opinion, a MCEOG question, and one that you make up on your own.

1.  Fact/Opinion
Question:  State a fact and an opinion about this section.  What is the difference between the two?
Fact:  Page 47 par. 3.  Meg killed a rabbit for dinner.
Opinion:  Page 51.  Will would get along really well with Mr. Jenkins.
Answer:  The difference between a fact an opinion is a fact actually really happened in the book.  The example of an opinion is how I feel about Will getting along with Mr. Jenkins.  It is not correct because it is just my feelings on the subject.

2.  Prediction
Question:  What do you think will happen between Will, Hank, Amos, and Patrick?
Answer:  I think they will eventually become friends and they will see a lot of each other.

3.  MCEOG
Question:  All of the following words describe how Will feels when he is lost on the path to look for rabbits except which one?
A.  Puzzled
B.  Happy
C.  Lost
D.  Nervous
Answer:  The answer is B.  Happy.

4.  Character's action
Question:  How did Meg react when her mother wanted her to take a rabbit over to Mr. Jenkin's? Why did she react this way?
Answer:  She was shocked (in disbelief).  She reacted this way because Mr. Jenkins said some things to her father because he did not fight in the war (page 49, par. 5).

Passage Picker:

Directions:  Your job is to pick out four passages.  Listed below are the reasons for choosing the passages:

1.  Page 57, par 4.  "Hank ignored...Charlie Page"
This passage uses dialect to make the child sound uneducated.
Question:  What did the boys want to ask Will about?
Answer:  If he ever heard of a guy named Charlie Page from Winchester.
Author's Purpose:  to inform

2.  Page 49, par. 8.  "We'll finally...us since"
This passage was very intriguing because it made you want to know what was going to happen next.
Question:  Why did Mr. Jenkins want to fight Jed?
Answer:  Because he did not fight in the war.

3.  Page 60, par. 7  "Ever see...a day"
This passage gave good information on the history of the war.
Question:  Where was Will talking about?
Answer:  Winchester
Author's purpose:  to inform

Your job is to find the following words in this section.  Write the sentence the word appears in and give a definition of the word.  Then, make up a sentence using the word in it.

1.  Ruefully
Page 37, line 4.  "He straightened up to rest his aching back for a moment and flexed his fingers, looking ruefully at the blisters forming on his palms."
Definition:  mournful, regretful
Part of speech:  adv.
Word used in a sentence:  After the boy did what his mother told him not to do, he looked at her ruefully and apologized.


2.  Ominous
Page 41, par. 1.  "Now the silence of the woods seemed ominous."
Definition:  fore showing evil, threatening
Part of speech:  adj.
Word used in a sentence:  I woke up from a bad dream and felt scared in my ominous room.

Character Sketcher:

Do a character sketcher on Will.  Draw a picture of him and give three traits that describe him.  For the three traits you choose, give proof as to why you think these words describe him.  Write what you think the character's goals, problems, and solutions (or possible solutions) to the problems are.

1.  Impressed.  Page 44, par. 4.  In this passage, Jed shows how he is impressed by Will's work by giving him a compliment.
2.  Sarcastic.  Page 43, par. 3.  Jed shows his sarcasm towards Will in this passage when he teases him about the fence.
3.  Sympathetic.  Page 47, par. 9.  When Will gets scratched by the rabbit, Jed is very sympathetic.
Character's Goals:
He wants Will to take pride in his work (page 39, par.1).
Character's Problems:
Jed wants Will to learn how to become more responsible (page 37, par. 2).
Character's Solutions:
Jed is giving Will a lot of responsibility around the house to help him to become more responsible (page 37, par. 4).

Your job is to draw a picture about this section.  It can be any kind of picture you want to draw (i.e. cartoon, stick figure...).  The drawing can be something that happened in the story, something this section made you think of, or of a feeling that you got when reading this section.  On a separate piece of paper, write a descriptive paragraph about your drawing.  The paragraph should answer questions:  Who, What, Where, When, and why you drew the picture.

This picture is showing when Will got lost going to look for the rabbits.  It happened when he was walking along the path one morning by himself.  I drew this picture because I thought it was kind of funny how Will was trying to prove to his uncle that he could find the path, and then he got lost!
