Literature Circle Unit:
Native Americans
4th grade
Derek Compton, Anna Edge, and Meredith Macon

This is a fourth grade Literature Circles Unit about Native Americans.  In addition  to the on grade level lessons, the unit addresses both the third and fifth grade levels, as well.  Literature Circles offer a new reading instructional strategy, which allows every student to read books at thier instructional level within a group.  This provides all students with the opportunity to read real books and benefit from them.  The books are separated into sections.  Within the sections, each group member is assigned an alternating job.  These jobs require the students to refer back to the text for information, and they allow the students to set their own purpose for reading.  Literature Circles aid in comprehension and teach students necessary research skills.  Literature Circles meet a variety of competencies,  while working specifically with Literature, Reading, and Writing skills.  Each of the competencies covered by this unit, as well as the unit plan for each book and instructional level, can be accessed through the table below.
