The Witch of Blackbird Pond, by Elizabeth George Speare, is a wonderful example of historical fiction set in the seventeenth century. It chronicles several months in the life of Kit Tyler, a sixteen year old girl who was born and raised by an English family on the tropical island of Barbados. After her grandfather dies and she is left with no one, she leaves the island to stay in Wethersfield, Connecticut with the aunt, uncle and cousins that she has never met. She soon finds that the lifestyle in New England is very different from that to which she is accustomed and feels extremely out of place much of the time. She is comforted however, by the friendship she cultivates with an old Quaker woman who is looked down upon by the rest of the town. The two of them manage to help each other in many ways. Among the many adventures that Kit experiences, the last is  falling in love with the young sailor who brought her to America, and with his help, delivering Hannah from the dangers that have arisen for her in Wethersfield.
