Fifth through Eighth grades








- Kat Danner is a seventh grade teacher at Mabel Elementary School  She has been part of the Mabel family for fourteen years.  She teaches reading and language arts.  She is originally from Elizabethton, Tennessee.  She has three children, two grandchildren, and her husband is retired from the military.  She lived in Morocco from 1985-1986.  She has lived and taught in seven states.  Her most memorable moment was moving from the old school to the new school.

- Kim Arthur is a math teacher at Mabel Elementary School.  She just became a member of the Mabel family (Fall 1999).  She is the yearbook director.  She is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina.  She has taught kindergarten, fifth grade, and AG.  She was the cheerleading squad coach at McMichael High School in Madison, North Carolina.  Her most memorable moment at Mabel Elementary School was the fall festival.  She helped the eighth grade do a haunted house and they had a blast!
 

- Joyelle Parker is an A.G. teacher for grades 6-8.   She became part of the Mabel family in September, 1999.  She is originally from Marietta, Georgia.  She has two children, and her husband, Dr. Dan Root, teaches at Caldwell Community College.  They have their own home based business called Joyful Llama of Faille Farm, Incorporated.  Her husband has his own business, which provides beneficial inserts for use in agriculture.  She has a bachelor's degree from Smith College and obtained her master's degree from Duke University.  She is an ordained pastor in The United Methodist Church.

- Cheri Harmon is an eighth grade Algebra I teacher.  She has been teaching for fifteen years (ten in high school and five in middle school).  A graduate of ASU, Ms. Harmon enjoys crafts, sewing, singing, playing the piano, and shopping.  This year, six of her students will attend the NCCTM Algebra I contest in the spring.  Past teachers, colleagues, ASU professors, and students who want to learn have all influenced her teaching.

- Carolyn Kahn teaches fifth grade science and social studies.  She has been teaching for four years.  She received a BA in Psychology from University of Tennessee, as well as a Masters of Teaching from Virginia Commonwealth University.  She enjoys hiking, reading, needlepoint, and playing with her dogs.  She is excited about dissecting fetal pigs in her class this year.

- Judd Pinnix works with fifth through eighth graders and he has been teaching for seven years.  A graduate of ASU, he enjoys outdoor activities.  His class is diligently preparing for competitions this year.

- Brian Huffman works with grades sixth through eighth and has been teaching for ten years.  A graduate of ASU, he enjoys baseball, walking, hiking, and reading.  His class will be doing a wax museum where they will become ancient Greek and Roman characters.  His family influenced his decision to become a teacher because both of his parents were teachers.  His sister is currently teaching fifth grade.

- Lori Holycross is the middle school resource teacher.  She has been in this line of work for seventeen years.  She obtained her BS in Education from Ohio State University and her Masters Degree in Special Education from Radford University in Virginia.  Some of her other interests are family (including a dog and two cats), reading for fun, and animals.  She is administering a monthly phonics program designed by Pat Cunningham.  It includes commonly misspelled words, brand name phonics, the "Nifty Thrifty Fifty" words, and others.  Her fifth grade teacher's love of teaching and her interest in her students has influenced her to consider teaching.  Tutoring students who struggled guided her from regular education to pursue a degree in working with the learning disabled.
