The students had a wide variety of favorite books. Through our research, we learned that some Kindergarten/First grade students like books with memorable characters. The children from Bethel enjoy Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne, and the Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The Kindergartners at Beech are in a stage where they like classic Fairy Tales. Their favorites are Rumplestilskin, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Cinderella. Children at this age like books that they are familiar with. Since many of the children do not know how to read, they like to pretend that they do. Once that they have heard a story several times they memorize the text. This makes the child believe that he/she is reading. This is usually another reason for these books being their "favorites".
