LESSON: Modern Fashion & Design
TIME NEEDED: It will take approximately two days.
MATERIALS NEEDED: The teacher needs to collect
random objects, anything, just so that there are enough objects for each
pair of students to have an object. Each pair of students will also
need access to a computer. Remember to sign up for the computer lab
in advance if you need to. A digital camera and floppy discs for
students to save their work on are also needed. For resources it
may be helpful to have the "Cut the Cheese" example and magazines and newspapers
on hand to clarify the assignment to students.
DIRECTIONS:
STEP 1: Bring the objects to class and
after the class is in pairs ask each pair to pick one object. Tell
the class that they will make up a use for the object. If the object
is already known for how it is used have the students disregard that and
create something different. Feel free to refer to the "Cut the Cheese"
example and explain that an unknown metal object was chosen and made into
a cheese cutter.
STEP 2: Instruct the students to discuss
their object with their partner and decide what their object will be.
The students will then be asked to take turns with the digital camera (with
teacher assistance) and photograph the object with or without the student
in the picture.
STEP 3: After the photos are taken students
will insert them onto their page.
STEP 4: Have the students read the "Cut
the Cheese" article and explain that they will also be writing an article
about their objects. This part of the assignment should be completed
individually so that each student has practice writing. They will
be writing in the style of a newspaper or magazine article. Point
out the different aspects of the article such as: quotes, history, descriptives,
etc.. Students can also view actual newspaper and magazine articles.
STEP 5: Have the students write their article.
Make sure it is edited.(Peer editing might be an option here.)
STEP 6: Each student should print out their
article(which includes their picture) to share with the class. The
products may be displayed in the room or verbally shared or even both.
