Description of Activity:
The Modern Fashion and Invention Activity encourages students to become creative inventors.  Groups of students select odd objects from a teacher collection and create new uses for the items.  Students then use digital cameras to photograph the inventions in use, construct informative
newspaper articles about the inventions, and design web pages to showcase revised articles and photographs of the new inventions.

*Digital cameras

*Computers with Netscape Navigator and Composer, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Word, and Internet access

*Two or three floppy disks per student

Process:
*Students are assembled into groups of approximately three to four members

*The teacher introduces students to a Mystery Box containing odd gadgets

*Groups of students select one object from the box and create a new use for the object

*Invented objects should be fashion related, such as a wire hairnet, a hair straightener, or a fingernail buffer

*Students should use digital cameras to photograph their inventions in use

*With teacher assistance, students should adjust digital images using Adobe Photoshop

*For Help With Adobe Photoshop Click Here

*Photographs should be saved to each group members individual disk

*Using Microsoft Word, students should individually write newspaper articles or advertisements
to inform others of the new invention and promotes its use

*With teacher guidance, students should use Netscape Navigator and Netscape Composer to design web pages, as a means of displaying their newspaper articles and related photographs. To communicate with others about the Modern Fashion and Invention activity, students should include email addresses on their web pages

Group Work:
Students should work in cooperative groups of three to four students to develop ideas for the new
use of their odd gadget.  Groups of students should share digital cameras and computers if necessary.  Students will learn how to communicate with each other while working toward a common goal.  Together students generate ideas, as well as assist one another with technology related questions and/or problems

Teacher Feedback:
Teachers should offer feedback on the Modern Fashion and Invention activity via email.  Each student should receive at least one email, during the course of the activity, offering suggestions and/or encouragement.  Teachers may also communicate final project grades to students via email
