Teacher Page

Grade 5

In this activity your students will cover a wide variety of things.   They will understand how to use a digital camera as well as how to create a web page.   The students will also use language arts skills to compose a newspaper article about there invention.

Day One

On the first day have your students get into groups of three or four and have them choose an object from an assortment of objects that you have brought to class.   Have the students brainstorm with their group to come up with an application for the object other than what it is normally used for.  After the group has brainstormed, distribute the digital cameras, and go over how to load the disc and take pictures. (Some teachers may prefer to take the photo themselves, but in this case be sure to explain to the students the process as you go along.)

After the photos are taken, have the students use the Adobe Photoshop to view and crop their pictures if necessary.

Have the students complete a newspaper article (one per student)  on their invention for homework.  Be sure that they include the following:  Name, Inventor, Use, Future Inventions, Public Reactions.

Day Two

Have the children proofread each other's newspaper articles.
Using Navigator Composer, instruct the children on how to create a web page using their newspaper articles and pictures.  Also have the students link the page to a page that describes the process so that other students may try this activity.
