Artifact 2:  Social Studies Textbook Evaluation

Context:
In my Social Studies in the Elementary Schools course I had to do a textbook evaluation.  This artifact is a textbook evaluation of two third grade social studies books.  After the textbook was chosen there was a list of questions that needed to be answered.  I had to look at the textbook in depth to see how the publisher published the book.  In this course I did the evaluation to see how different texts were written and to determine if I would use that textbook in my classroom and try to decide why one book was chosen by North Carolina and the other book was not.

Impact:
By doing this textbook evaluation I was able to see what materials were covered in the curriculum of a third grade social studies class.  The textbook evaluation also allowed me to see what type of textbooks are available for me to use in my classroom and to use as resources for lessons.  As a teacher I will want to evaluate the textbooks that I will be using in my classroom.

Alignment:
The textbook evaluation allowed me to evaluate a textbook that is used in schools today and one that is not used.  I was able to determine which text was the one that I wanted to teach with when I begin teaching social studies (Tech Comp 10.6).  This textbook evaluation also allowed me to see what types of textbooks are available for me to use in my classroom and to use resources for lessons.  By evaluating textbooks, I can choose the textbooks that best represent the curriculum I am supposed to teach.  By having access to the best possible textbooks I can create learning experiences such as ABC booklets, traveling pamphlets, etc. that are fun and help the students understanding of that particular subject.  For example, in the Third Grade focus is on communities.  A textbook chosen because of its quality through an evaluation can be used as a resource to create an ABC booklet (INTASC #1).
