Experience:
Student Teaching:  Hardin Park Elementary School, Boone, NC, Spring 2002.  Cooperating Teacher:  Ms. Corrie Freeman.  During this experience, I worked in a fourth grade classroom.  I planned lessons for every subject.  I had the opportunity to teach a literature circle, geometry, electricity, and poetry, to name a few topics.  I worked closely with the AIG teacher to plan differentiated instruction for the many levels of students in my classroom.  I had the opportunity to team teach with my neighboring teacher, Ms. Cathy Cottrell.

Internship:  Mabel Elementary School, Zionville, NC, Fall 2001.  Cooperating Teacher:  Mrs. Diane Butts.  During this experienced, I worked with third grade students.  I spent this time observing strategies, rules, and management skills that will help me prepare for student teaching, as well as my own classroom.  I served as an assistant to the student teacher, mostly helping the students better understand problems and work that they had difficulty with.  I worked one-on-one with a child to help improve his spelling and reading.  I used strategies such as Word Recognition Instruction (WRI) and IRI to assess his level of reading.  I did word study exercises with him daily.  I did Math lessons including measurement and graphing, which helped them understand line plots better, and introduced vocabulary words that went along with these exercises. I assisted both the student teacher and cooperating teacher in any way necessary, including classroom management, to make the class run in a smoother manner.

Mentor:  Blowing Rock Elementary School Extended Learning Center, Blowing Rock, NC, Fall 2000-Spring 2001.  During this experience, I helped create a safe learning environment after school for students from Kindergarten through sixth grade.  My duties included snack preparation, cleaning up, whole group instruction, free time, small group instruction, reading, and just networking with the students.  In Fall 2000, I worked with anywhere from fifty-five to seventy children daily.  In Spring 2001, I worked more closely with second through sixth grade, which included an average of 30 students.  I helped implement homework time and activities for this group daily.  I assisted in the teaching of common courtesy, character education, and respect.

Volunteer:  Carol Jean Cancer Foundation, Camp Friendship, Laytonsville, MD, Summer 2000 and 2001.  This experience offered me the opportunity to be a camp counselor for sixty-five children who were suffering, recovering, or the family member of one suffering from cancer.  My main duty was to insure the safety of a group of sixteen girls from the ages of six to twelve.  I slept in the cabin with them, took them for medication, helped them set up and clean up three meals a day, and helped them with activities that were not available to them throughout the year.  I planned afternoon activities and led a group of twenty kids and counselors in camp activities daily.  Above all this, my goal was to instill in them a belief that I loved them for who they were, not the disease they had, and to help present a place where “kids could just be kids.”
