Experience:
· Student Teaching at
Fall Creek Elementary School, East Bend, NC, Spring 2002. Cooperating
teacher: Mrs. June
Hayes. During this experience, I worked with a
3rd grade class. I observed, assisted, and taught students at a 3rd
grade level. I implemented
Literature Circles, an Interdisciplinary Unit that accommodates different
instructional
reading levels, designed to increase
reading success and comprehension. I used IRIs and WRIs as an
assessment to
determine the instructional levels
of my students. I taught the writing process, through modeling rough
drafts and the
revision cycle with examples of other writings, to
help students understand the importance of drafting and revision.
I
practiced shared writing with my students to help them gain an appreciation
for others writing and to open them to new
ideas from their classmates. I implemented the
use of the Natural Math strategy to ensure understanding new concepts
and to enable students to discover
the meaning and connections in Math on their own. I also integrated
other subjects
such as Social Studies and Science
into my teaching as much as possible, to open students minds up to new
ideas and things
that we need to learn in order to function in society.
· Internship at Mabel
Elementary School, Zionville, NC, Fall, 2001. Cooperating teacher:
Ms. Susan Brookshire.
During this experience, I worked
with a 1st grade class. I observed, assisted, and taught students
at a 1st grade level
in order to prepare myself for
student teaching. Throughout the semester I worked in small groups
with the students with
reading and math concepts.
I had the advantage of seeing how the students progressed throughout
the semester in these subject areas.
I also taught a Mathematical Investigations Unit over the period of one
week. I was introducing
geometrical shapes and concepts
to the students. I also helped the students to expand in their
writings techniques. I
assisted the students in music, art, P. E. and in
the computer lab. I also provided assistance to my cooperating
teacher
in any way necessary.
· C I 2800 Tutoring at
Hardin Park Elementary School, Boone, NC, Summer 2000. Throughout
the semester I tutored
three first grade students every afternoon for a couple of weeks.
This allowed me to work one on one with the
students, to help the better
understand their homework and what concepts were being taught. I helped
each student to
improve their reading skills by letting them read to me every afternoon.
Then we proceeded on to playing math and letter
games to build these different concepts and understandings. We
did art projects together that involved drawing and
coloring.
My main goal for this was to getting to know children and becoming comfortable
helping and teaching them
new concepts.
· High School Internship at
East Bend Elementary School, East Bend, NC, Spring 1998. Cooperating
teacher: Mrs.
Candace Dinkins. Throughout the semester I observed
and assisted a kindergarten class in any way possible. I
worked in small groups with the
students, helping them complete activities for class. I taught
a small science lesson to
the students on sinking and floating.
I assisted the students in music, P. E., and art. I also provided
assistance to my
cooperating teacher in any way necessary.
