Experiences
Internship at Mabel Elementary School, Zionville, NC during Fall 2001.
Cooperating Teacher: Mrs. Tonya McKinney
During this semester-long experience, I interacted with a second grade class of twenty-five students.  I had the opportunity to observe, assist individual students, and teach whole-group lessons.  I specifically taught a mathematics lesson focusing on sorting collections then representing the data with graphs.  In addition to the mathematics lesson, I planned and taught a DRTA format lesson for two small Reading groups, which also incorporated Science.  I worked closely with two students of lower-level reading ability.  These students participated in partner-reading and independent reading with me.  I also assisted these students in various Language Arts activities, such as planning and writing compositions.  I used the TRR assessment to chart the reading fluency of several students over the course of several weeks.  Besides teaching and assisting with lessons, I also helped to manage the class and maintain order throughout the school day.  I also helped my cooperating teacher as needed such as by grading papers, researching books, and gathering materials for upcoming lessons.

Volunteer Counselor at Camp Friendship, Maryland, during August 2001.
Camp Friendship is a camp for children who have/had cancer or have siblings or parents that have/had cancer, which is sponsored by the Carol Jean Cancer Foundation.  I had the opportunity to volunteer as a Camp Counselor for one week through the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program.  I was one of seven counselors who took care of about 25 “bears” (boys from ages 7 to 13), which were only a fourth of the children attending the camp.  While at the camp, the children enjoyed paddle-boating, sewing, arts and crafts, swimming, confidence course, and nightly celebrations of life.  This was a special ten-year anniversary of the founding of the camp and some of the campers had been attending for most of the ten years.  Since Camp Friendship campers had various physical and mental disabilities, I gained valuable experience dealing with children with different ability levels.

Substitute Teaching, Surry County School System, Surry County, NC in Spring and Fall 2001.
I have substituted at both the elementary and secondary grade levels in such areas such as music, anatomy, and all elementary subjects.  The class sizes have ranged from twenty to 35 students.  In some instances, the teachers have left inadequate lesson plans, which required great flexibility and improvising.

Tutoring, Parkway Elementary School, Boone, NC in Spring 2001.
Cooperating Teacher: Janet Purcell
Through an Appalachian State University Teaching Fellows class, I tutored a student twice a week at Parkway Elementary School.  The student was in the second grade but had difficulties reading.  Through the First Steps Program, I worked with the student on Word Study lessons, reading fluency, and reading comprehension skills.  I also worked in a third grade class assisting small groups of students as needed and tutoring individual students as well.
