Focus and Review
Start out the class by asking the class to name two states that border NC other than Virginia? Review with the class the states that border NC and the importance of the states. The focus for the class today will be on Georgia. The teacher can show the students on a United States map and point out its geographical relationship to NC.
Statement of Objectives
Today students are going to
be learning more about Georgia through artwork and technology.
• Students will be making
diorama’s that represent many of Georgia’s state facts that the students
will be learning from the software they use.
• Students will be increasing
their knowledge on using technology by using computer software to find
out information on Georgia.
• Increase students writing
skills, writing a report on the state of Georgia.
Teacher Input
1. To begin the lesson on Georgia
the teacher needs to introduce state through a couple of important facts
such as:
• On January 19, 1861, Georgia
joined the Confederacy
• Georgia was named for King
George II of England.
• Georgia is the largest state
east of the Mississippi River.
2. Give the students the software
they will be using and ask the students to find out the following information
that may help them in designing their diorama’s.
• State Capital
• State Flag
• State Flower
• State Bird
• State Fish
• State Tree
• State Animal
• State Songs
• State Seal
• State Motto
3. Explain to the students
that after they have collected all their information from the following
software that they need to go to this website, and find out any four facts
from the website that they can include in their report and diorama.
4. Make sure to explain the expectations of the report. The report must include a title, an introduction, two paragraphs, and a conclusion. Students need to include the answers to the questions asked by the teacher, the four facts they found from the website, and about their diorama.
Guided Practice
Have students work on finding the information asked by them using the US Atlas software. Monitor the students by walking around the classroom to make sure they are on task and doing their work.
Also during this section students can work on the computers in pairs to go to the website above to find out their extra information. The teacher needs to make sure students are going to the assigned website, and not playing on the Internet. Pay close attention to this!
Independent Practice
Allow students to begin working on their dioramas once they have collected all their information and showed it to the teacher. Students can use any materials that are available for use to decorate their diorama. Make sure students have a theme that goes along with anything to do with Georgia.
Give enough time for students to work on part of their report but finish the report at home for homework, and be prepared to turn it in next class.
Closure
Students should wrap up and get done with their dioramas and put up all the materials they have used.
Ask students to volunteer to show their dioramas and explain what and why they chose to decorate their diorama the way they did?
Ask the students if they can
tell what GA and NC similarities and differences are based on the information
they have collected?
