Jenifer Frye and Miranda Oxentine
Kid Pix Studio Deluxe

1) strengths:
-Spans the curriculum range from preschool through 8th grade.
- Allows for printed or electronical presentations
- Contains a teachers guide
- Tutorials available for a variety of skill levels, are provided to help children learn to use programs features       independently.
- Multimedia development techniques provided that enable you to incorporate graphics, photos, written text and sound.
- Resources from books and web sites that support your use of Kid Pix in you classroom.
- User friendly
- Can be written in either Spanish or English.
2) weaknesses:
- May be too hard for a preschooler to work independently with because of their reading level.
- Too complicated for a preschooler to use except for doodling or the painting program.
- For many projects in the upper grades, it requires a lot of computer time, and this could be difficult when allocating computer time.

Goals: My portrait student has a lot of trouble with math. I noticed that she could not stand fractions, so I decided to put together a lesson plan on graphing percentages in a pie chart and a bar graph. I want to giver her a better understanding of polls, and graphing percentages.

General Description: Students will learn about designing and taking a poll on the number of pets that the fourth graders have.

Curricular Areas: math

Objectives:
- students will gather and organize data
- students will use graphing tools to compare data
- Students will present their data.

Class organization:
Divide class into small groups of 3

Materials: none

Time Required: several weeks to conduct the poll and tabulate the data. It will take one class period to make charts

Preparation and Procedure:
1) Divide the class into small groups
2) Discuss the different polls that students see and read about in the newspaper.
3) Decide what information should be gathered. (What four pets would the like to represent)? Include what questions to ask and how many people to poll.
4) Discuss how graphs make information easier to understand.
5) Introduce both the pie chart and the bar graph, and allow students to decide which one they want to use to present their data.
6) Have each group graph their data and present the findings to the class

For Pie charts: use the Oval tool. Hold the shift key down while drawing it to make a perfect circle. Use the line tool to draw the lines. Let the students approximate the size of the segments for the corresponding percentages within reason. Don’t let the difference be too apparent. Make sure that there are no spaces in the lines when you fill in the color.

For Bar graphs: Use the line tool to draw the X and Y-axes. Then use the Rectangle tool to make the bars. You can copy one bar and then paste it several times. This way the bars are uniform. Fill in each bar with color to represent the perc

Kid Pix is a very fun and interesting form of software to use in the classroom. I really enjoyed reviewing this piece of software with Miranda, and feel as though she enjoyed the review. The fifth grade class is fairly familiar with Kid Pix, and have access to it in their classroom. When I chose the software, I knew that Miranda had played with it before, but I wanted to show her that there was more to drawing on it. I wanted to show her through the evaluation that there are all sorts of use for the software. I began by having her pull up Kid Pix, and showing me what she normally does.
I think that the best part of the teaching experience was seeing her face when I began to show her all that she could do with the program, such as make stamps, slide shows, and use it in another language (Spanish). The reason I feel this was the best part is because I don’t think that they are actually allowed to explore the other program availabilities when they are using the software. She told me that the most she has ever done with the program was draw pictures and make cards. Miranda told me that her favorite subject is art, so I feel that I made a good choice of showing her more on this software. Miranda has a computer at home and would love to get this software so that she could explore it more and become artistic. Before doing this Evaluation, I had never seen Kid Pix before, so when I looked over it in the beginning, I was lost. The software is very user friendly, and so I was able to get a hold of it easily. When I was in search of what to teach her, I didn’t get to really “play” with it. She showed me the drawing board and how to make cards, and we even made a care together to give away to someone for Halloween.
After toying with the material for a while, I finally got to actually begin to show her the lesson that I wanted to teach her. I think she enjoyed drawing the graphs out and coloring them in and all. Of course I had to go in there with fake data for the polls, but we went over the problems, and turned them into the percentages that we needed and graphed them. If I were to do this session again, I would give the children more numbers more numbers to graph so that they as well as give them more percentages to change. She had lots of difficulty with changing the numbers over. So, next time, I need to be a little more knowledgeable of where the students stand in the math comprehension.
I feel as though I will definitely have this software in my classroom. It was a fun outlet to use when you want to be creative, as well as a learning tool. We put it in Spanish mode for a few moments and tried to figure out what it was saying. It is fun, yet very difficult. This software could be used in class for all subjects as it would be fun and easy to make up lesson plans to go along with each unit. Examples would be the math above, for S.S., they could make a map; and for language, they could write a poem and draw a picture to go with it. This software is a great and creative idea and I would love to have it in my classroom!!!

Computer signup times:
* note*  You may only sign up for once every two days. Everyone in the class is to use the computer before you go again. This is to ensure that everyone gets a chance to use the computer. If I find out that you are not following the rules, your computer time will be taken away. If you have any questions, please come ask me. When your time is up, your time is up, no matter what you are doing.
