Software Evaluation

I chose the software, "The Magic School Bus Explores the Human Body," to use with my portrait student.  This software was interesting and fun.  It also had great graphics, and wonderful sound effects.  The best part about teaching the "Magic School Bus" was watching the student explore all the options that were available on the software.  I also learned a great deal while working with the student on this software.  Another great aspect about teaching was the fact that I did not do a lot of the teaching or exploring.  My portrait student is a third grader who loves to explore subjects instead of being lectured.  My portrait student is not exposed to science a whole lot in school, and that is why I chose this particular software.  So, she could not get enough facts and information at once.  She wanted to see everything that was on the software in five minutes. I also learned that my student is not very patient.  She was not very patient while the bus was traveling to another part of the body.  She wanted to know what was going to happen next.  Each body part had specific information about them, and some sort of activity for the player to play.  I also learned that my portrait student did not have the best short term memory for this game.  She could not remember which body part she just went to.  So, she had to click on the skeleton every turn to see where she had visited.  She skeleton had all the body parts labeled, and it would show what had been visited and what had not.
Not only did my student learn during this evaluation, but she also taught me a couple of things.  When we first came into the computer lab, I could not figure out how to turn the computer on.  This was only my second time in the computer lab during my internship, so I was still learning about everything.  She also taught me that learning science can be an adventure.  Science is not my strong point, and her enthusiasm and excitement over this software, made me look at science in a whole new way.
This evaluation went well.  The only thing that I would change if I would use this software again would be to explore the software more thoroughly before presenting to a student or class.  I worked with the software one time before working with my student, and I had not learned everything about it before I used it.  I would apply this to any lesson that I will teach to a student or group of students.  I did not feel as prepared as I would have like to have been, and I will definitely keep this in mind before my next lesson.
I think I would use this software in my class.  It was very informational about the human body.  There were many activities that went along with each body part, and I believe that students would learn a great deal of information.  Another aspect that I liked about this software was the fact that it was not just full of games for the student to play.  There were more ways of learning about the different body parts on this software than simply playing a game.  I think that my portrait student simply liked the software because there was so much information to be learned.  I would even put my students into groups of two or three so they could help each other remember where they had visited and what was left to learn.  There are so many stops to make, that it would be hard for one student to do at once.  This software could be used in conjunction with a science lesson dealing with the human body.  The students could be assigned a particular body part and they could research interesting information about it.  They could use this software as a supplement to their learning and education.
