Listed here are two of the lessons
within the Social Studies Unit Plan. There was a total of 20 days
worth of lessons and various activities dealing with the topic of "People
In Our Community".
Author/Illustrator
Study
Objective:
Students will learn about an author and illustrator team, some of their
works, and will complete a Venn diagram using two children’s books by the
same author.
-
Begin by
reviewing the book, Fighting for the Forest by Gloria Rand, illustrated
by Ted Rand.
-
Ask students
what they notice about the author and illustrator’s names. Once students
conclude they have the same last name, ask why it is they may have
the same last name, Rand. When suggested the last name is the
same because the two are married, confirm the answer is correct.
-
Share author/illustrator
study chart with students (copy of chart attached).
-
Have children
go to the library and check out two easy-reader books by the same author.
(Children should know books in the Easy section are listed by author in
ABC order.)
-
For homework,
students will complete a Venn diagram (attached) and write under the diagram
all they learned about the author from reading the back covers of
the books or the book jackets.
Internet
Activity
Objective:
Students will learn facts about a community besides their own, they will
decide whether the community is rural, suburban, or urban, and will make
an illustrated flyer about the community.
Day 1
-
Students
should have just finished studying differences between urban, suburban,
and rural communities.
-
Distribute project
sheets (attached).
-
Have students
work in pairs at computer(s) gathering answers to the four questions on
the worksheet. Rotate students (at appropriate times of the day)
until all of them have completed the assignment. This should take
no more than fifteen minutes a piece. Emphasize to students NOT to
go any further than answering the four questions. Give individual
help when needed. (web page attached)
Day 2
-
Have students
sit in pairs (with whom they worked with the previous day).
-
Guide a question/answer
period dealing with the four questions previously answered.
-
In pairs, students
will complete the bottom of the worksheet.
Day 3
-
In pairs,
students will share their flyer to the rest of the class.
