Disney's Math Quest
Software Evaluation Lesson Plan
Angela Rogers

5th Grade Student

Objectives:
This software meets many objectives and goals that will enhance the students skills.  The software has three levels, and can be used from Kindergarten to third/ fourth grade.  My student is below grade level, and therefore the software is appropriate for her skills level.  She performs at a second grade level in mathematics.  The student has difficulty with place value past the tens place, and I will focus on using the software at level two/ three in order to allow her to work comfortably.  The objectives covered in this software are:

Sorting and Classifying   Mental Computation
Addition and Subtraction   Problem Solving
Geometry and Symmetry   Logical Reasoning
Multiplication and Division   Number Patterns
Attribute Recognition    Patterns

Focus and Review:
Discuss software with student and review aspects of the program with her.  Discuss skills needed in order to experiment with the software.  Overview place value through hundreds with student.  Student has used the software before in her math lessons, and the software will not be new to her.  I will explain to her the objectives that we will focus on in this lesson, and answer any questions she might have.

Teacher Input:
I will explain the objectives and activities of the lesson with the student.  I will also review place value with the student.  Throughout the lesson I will direct her thinking through questions, and will also help her find the answers to problems that she may have trouble with.  The software is an interactive game, and uses a less structured and repetitive approach to learning the math skill covered in the objectives.

Guided Practice:
Explore and manipulate the software with the student as she works through math problems.  Allow her to play through the game following the directions the game gives her.  I will ask questions to guide her thinking and reasoning, and answer any questions she may have.
Independent Practice:
Allow the student to work through the game and to work through all to the math problems.  Ask the student to begin thinking about place value in the hundreds and in the thousands place for homework.  Have the student to write down example of these numbers that she thinks about or sees.
