Philosophy of Teaching

“A hundred years from now
It will not matter what my bank account was,
the type of house I lived in,
or the kind of car I drove...
... but the world may be different
because I was important
in the life of a child.”

Many years ago I found this quote in a book.  This says a great deal about why I want to teach.  Teaching for me is not just a job; it is an adventure.  I want to open children’s minds to all kinds of books.  I love seeing a child’s eyes light up when he understands or has learned a new word.

What we do now in the education of our children will determine their future.  I want to play a small part in their future to help motivate, encourage, and teach them to do the best they can. I want to give them the tools to fulfill their potential and give them the strength to get back up when they fall.  I want to teach them that every child regardless of race, color, or gender has the opportunity to achieve their goals.  I want them to take with them the confidence to fly and go beyond the impossible.
I have always wanted to be a teacher as far back as I can remember.  Many children will come through my classroom in the years to come.  I want to show them that their voice matters in this large world and they can make a difference. Students need to understand that everyone has something they are good at and can take pride in.  I want to be the type of teacher that believes in her students when they do not believe in themselves.  Children should be categorized.  Every child should be considered individually.  Children have lives outside of the classroom that directly effect their performance and personality.  I want to reach every child that comes through my classroom.  I want to make a difference.

There are very few things in life that can enable you to make a living and also be very rewarding.  When I decided to pursue a career in teaching, I had so many people tell me that the money they pay a teacher was low compared to other occupations.  Teachers are underpaid.  However, since then I have had the opportunity to tutor over the years and now I am doing my internship.  No amount of money can compare to what satisfaction I get from the children I come in contact with.  I love the interaction with the children.

To me being happy is loving what you do and doing what you love.  Education, experience, and memories are three things that no one can take away from you.  I plan to teach for a long time and learn as I go because we all need to learn all the time.  I want lots of memories that I can cherish.

“A Teacher’s Prayer”

I want to teach my students
how to live their life on Earth.
To face its struggles and its strifes
and to improve their worth.
Not just the lessons in a book
or how the rivers flow.
But how to choose the proper path
wherever they may go.
