Software Evaluation
I chose to use Magic
School Bus- Explore the Ocean for my software. The focus
of the program is on science and geography. However, it also incorporates
vocabulary and computer skills. The object of the game is to find
clues that lead to the hidden treasure. The thing that I particularly
liked about this game was that there were many other components as well.
Andrew and I did not find the treasure, and yet I felt that was successful
anyway. Along the way, he was able to play various games related
to the area of the ocean he was exploring. He was also surprised
and rewarded throughout his exploration, and there were many opportunities
for success.
I learned that my student
was not easily frustrated. Some of the games are hard to catch on
to, but he was persistent and seemed to enjoy the challenge. In fact,
I almost had to force him to quit the games and move on.
I also realized that he knows his way around the computer pretty well.
I was able to see this because the program provides many options of ways
to move about the screens and participate in the games.
There are also many different
areas of the ocean to explore in this program, that we explored some of
them together. He would find things to click on that I didn't even
know were there. He was teaching me as well, which I thought was
a lot of fun and I think he enjoyed too.
If I were to use this
program again, I would probably try to explore the treasure aspect a little
more, and really focus on the clues. This is one p [art of the game
that I think kids will love, and it forces them to search through some
of the more informational portions of the program. I would definitely
use this program again because there are so many focal areas. Therefore,
just about any student can benefit from it, including children with special
needs. I say this because of the flexibility and the accommodating features.
The directions are spoken, so the student can hear and see what you should
do. You also have options as to how to move throughout the program.
These beneficial features would make it easy to use the program in any
classroom. It could be used for instructional purposes in science
and social studies, as a reward, to help kids with special needs, or to
help improve computer skills.
