Software Evaluation:

The software that I am using is Math Keys for K-2.  I am focusing on measurement.  This software would be a good introduction to measurement.  However, the level of this program is very simple.  The program does not leave room for advancement.  It works with comparison measurement but not with ruler measurement.  The software does include games to play that works with spatial awareness.  The purpose of my portrait child working with this software is to give him extra practice on measurement.  This will be an interesting lesson because I think that Jessie understood the concept of measurement when we went over it in class.  It will be interesting to see if he becomes bored with the software or if he demonstrates difficulties with measurement that I did not observe in class or in his work.
For this lesson, I will take Jessie into the computer lab to do this lesson.  I will set up the program for him.  He will work with the comparison measurement section on length.  At first I will let Jessie explore to see if what he will do.  I want to see if he already know how to work with this program.  Then I will give him specific items to compare.  If time allows, I will let Jessie play on of the games on the program.  It stacks blocks to a certain point.  The rule is like blackjack, the stack has to end up a certain size to win.  If the stack is too large, then the player loses.  I will see how Jessie does with this game. I think that these two activities will give me a good idea of how well Jessie works with measurement and computers.

Software Evaluation Reflection
My software evaluation was done with Math Key K-2; Measurement.  I did my evaluation with a second grader named Jessie Watson.  The best part about teaching this software was that Jesse was excited, he loved working with the computers.  He told me this was his favorite thing that he had done with me.  I was glad to see him enjoy the lesson so much.  I learned that Jessie was very comfortable using a computer.  In fact, I believe that he had worked some with this software before.  My student did not teach me anything new about the software but he did teach me that by second grade, students are capable of running a computer.  I was to do this session again I would use it at an earlier time during the measuring unit in math.  By this point the class had passed the point of measuring with objects where using rulers with both inches and centimeters.  I may use this software but only as an introduction or as practice for students who are having a lot of difficulty.  The software is very simple with little room for expansion of difficulty.  If I were to use this in my classroom, I think it would be a good way for students to explore measurement without the teacher’s introduction.  It is very simple and students are able to understand it.
