Portrait of a Learner
During my senior year at ASU, I took a media literacy class. In this class, I did a project focusing on one student. This student was in a kindergarten class at Mabel Elementary School. In this project I created a three to five minute video on the learning style of my portrait student. I gathered footage of the child as he went through the regular school day. After the footage was collected, I edited it and put a voice over and music to it. This tape talked about the day my portrait learner experienced at school.
From doing this project, I learned that everyone learns differently. I was able to focus on one student and learn how they think, interact with other students, and participate in class. As a teacher we need to know how all of our students do these things. Knowing how the students learn will enable me to create lessons that will be valuable to my student.
In creating this video, I had to use a video camera to capture the actions of my portrait learner. Using this piece of technology to gather data fulfills Competency 12.2. This portrait of a learner focuses on the learning programs of my student. Tracing the learning process fulfills Competency 12.3. For this presentation of the video, a VCR and remote was used to play the video for the professor and parents. Using the VCR and remote fulfills Competency 12.6.
