Software Evaluation

Math Keys: Unlocking Measurement Volume 1

Strengths:
· A variety of options to choose from
· Kid friendly
· Different levels for different learners
· Great animation

Weaknesses:
· Program had NO instructions which made the program hard to follow.
· Buttons on software had nothing to describe what they were or what they done.

Goals:
· To allow the student to practice work with measurement.

Plan for teaching:

Tell student what we will be doing. Allow Portrait Student to explore the software. After the student has had time to look over the software, have the student pick one of the three games (Lights On, Tight Fit!, or Eleven High!). Give the student instructions on how to play the game that was chosen. Allow the student to play the game for about five minutes. Next, have the student move to one of the two games left. Give the student instructions on how to play the game. Allow the student to play the game for a few minutes. Lastly, move to the last game left. Give the student instructions on how to play the last game. Then allow the student to play this game for a few minutes. Once the student has played all three games, allow the student to give feedback about which game that he liked best and why.

Reflection:

The best part about teaching this lesson was allowing the student to explore each of the games. I liked allowing the student the freedom to choose what came next. Through this activity, I learned that my student is a very open child who is eager to try anything. During the lesson, my student taught me how to play one of the games that I thought was very confusing. If I were to do this session again, I would definitely give the student more time to explore and play the games. My student was very eager to continue and there wasn’t any time left. This software would not be at the top of my list to use in my classroom because it does not have any instructions on it. This software could be used as a reinforcement for concepts and it could also be used during free time or center time.
