Philosophy of Teaching

Through my experiences at Appalachian State University, I have obtained the information to develop my own philosophy of teaching.  I will use this information to encourage positive learning and meet the needs of all my students.  My philosophy of teaching includes promoting a positive learning experience for my students by the arrangement of the classroom, being available to my students when they need my help, and modifying and adapting my instructional strategies to meet the individual needs of my students.
When I was in elementary school I had wonderful teachers and I have more memories of them than the work we did in class.  As part of my philosophy of teaching, I want to provide a variety of fun and exciting educational experiences that my children will be able to carry with them for the rest of their lives.  I plan to use a spectrum of teaching strategies to create these wonderful experiences.  In my classroom, learning will be fun and interesting no matter what the content material is.  I will also encourage discussion in my classroom while the students work to allow them to share ideas and learn from one another.  However, the students must stay on task and keep their voices low.
My classroom will be arranged to promote a positive learning environment for my students.  Their work will be displayed throughout the room reinforcing the fact that the children and their work are valued.  My classroom will be open and the furniture will be easy to move depending on what the activity calls for.  Independent, partner and small group reading will be encouraged by the use of the “Book Nook.”  The use of computers will have students using technology as a means of learning and communication.  Math and art supplies will be neatly stored in tubs in a particular area of the room.
As a teacher, I feel it is important that I make myself available to my students both before, during, and after school.  If a student is having trouble with school or at home, I feel it is my duty to help if they ask me to or if I feel they need it.  I realize that I may be the only positive role model for my students and if I can only reach one child I will feel I have done my job.
Assessment will play a major role in my classroom in all of the subject areas.  It will take place daily, weekly and monthly for the whole class, small groups and individuals.  These assessments will allow me to see the strengths and weaknesses of groups and individuals and determine the levels of students as they change.  By recognizing these strengths, weaknesses, and different levels I am able to modify and adapt my instruction to meet the individual needs of the diverse learners in my classroom.  As a teacher, I also feel it is my duty to be flexible and modify my teaching strategies to meet the constantly changing curriculum.
I chose to go into teaching because I want to make a difference.  For the rest of my life, I will constantly be learning.  Even while I am teaching children I will be learning from my students with all that they have to offer.  I believe that each child has a special gift and I want to always be able to find that gift and nurture it to the best of my ability.
