Experience
Student Teaching, Mabel Elementary School, Zionville, NC, Fall 2001.
Cooperating teacher: Mrs. Diane Butts. During this experience,
I observed, assisted, and taught students at a third grade level.
I implemented Literature Circles, an Interdisciplinary Unit that accommodates
different instructional reading levels, designed to increase reading success
and comprehension. I taught the writing process, modeling rough drafts
and the revision cycle with examples of my own writings, to help students
appreciate the importance of drafting and revision. I practiced shared
writing to develop student appreciation for other’s work and to help them
find new horizons through other people’s ideas and points of view.
I implemented the use of the Natural Math strategy to ensure understanding
of new concepts and to enable students to discover the meaning and connections
in Mathematics on their own. I also made use of the IRI, WRI, and
ERSI assessment instruments to determine the instructional level of my
students.
Internship, Beech Mountain Elementary School, Elk Park, NC, Spring 2001. Cooperating teacher: Mrs. Tonya McKinney. During this experience, I worked with fourth and fifth grade students. This was an opportunity to prepare myself for student teaching. I observed, assisted, and taught these students to become more familiar with these grade and developmental levels. I helped implement Literature Circles and led a lower level reading group in increasing fluency. I gave the students practice using a thesaurus in writing poetry and recreating stories. I helped students develop their understanding of Math concepts by using techniques that made sense to them, such as “building” in division. I practiced using the IRI, WRI, and ERSI assessment instruments and used the DRTA format to introduce new books for Literature Circles. I assisted the students in art, music, and their talent show. I also provided assistance to my cooperating teacher in any way necessary.
Assistant Teacher, Lucy Brock Child Development Center, Appalachian State University, Boone, NC 28608, 2000. During this experience, I worked with pre-school children from the ages of three to five. I helped them become acclimated to a structured school day routine. This included playtime and the responsibility of cleaning up, whole group instruction, lunch etiquette, naptime, and teaching common courtesy, respect, and consideration for others. I assisted in exposing the children to new objects, ideas, and experiences.
Volunteered with Inner-city Kids Camp, Roaring Gap, NC, Summer 2000.
During this experience, I worked with a group of kids ranging in ages from
five to twelve. This camp experience provided an opportunity for
these children to temporarily escape from the city and gain an appreciation
of the outdoors. I assisted the children in many games and outdoor
activities.
