Reading Assessment – I used the ERSI (Early Reading Screening Instrument) to assess a kindergarten student’s reading ability.

Context:
This assignment was completed as a part of my Reading Instruction for Classroom Teachers class during my Block experience at ASU.  I was told to perform the ERSI on a middle level student in the class, score the student, and reflect on the process.

Impact:
This form of assessment is an evaluation of a student’s ability to read and decode words.  This test can be helpful to teachers when determining what reading level a student is on and the reading group in which the student should be placed within the classroom.  During the assessment, the student is asked to verbalize and write the alphabet, read short stories, identify sight words and practice inventive spelling.

Alignment:
By learning and practicing the act of giving an ERSI, I feel better prepared to give this form of assessment as a teacher.  This type of assessment is ongoing and will help me as a teacher to keep up with all of my students’ progress over the school year.  I know that it is important to test students continuously throughout the year in order to know the best working environment for them and to help them grow as a learner (INTASC #8).  After completing this assessment, I not only scored the student but I also reflected on the entire experience.  I looked back on what went well and what could have been improved, both for the student and for my ability as an assessment facilitator.  By reflecting on this event, I was able to evaluate myself as a future teacher and to determine what I can do to improve myself professionally (INTASC #9).
