Experience

Student Teaching, Mountain View Elementary, 5911 Dwayne Starnes Road, Hickory, NC  28602, Fall 2001, Cooperating teacher:  Mrs. Elizabeth Amick.  During this experience, I observed, assisted, and taught students at a second grade level.  I used the IRI, WRI, and ERSI assessment instruments to determine the instructional level of my students.  I provided my students with a balanced reading program using traditional literature, phonics, and contemporary literature.  I implemented Literature Circles, an Interdisciplinary Unit that accommodates different instructional reading levels, designed to increase reading success and comprehension.  I integrated Social Studies into everyday classroom life by giving each student a job to perform and responsibilities to fulfill.  I introduced the writing process, write, revise, rewrite through class stories written as a group.  Through this process and modeling rough drafts and the importance of drafting and revision, they developed an appreciation for it.  I introduced new math concepts using the Natural Math strategy to ensure understanding and to enable the students to discover the meaning and connections on their own.  They do what makes sense to them.

Internship, Beech Mountain Elementary School, Elk Park, NC, Spring 2001.  Cooperating teacher:  Mrs. Tonya McKinney.  During this experience, I worked as an intern with the 4th/5th grade combination class.  I observed, assisted, and taught these students preparing myself for student teaching.  Throughout the semester I helped implement Literature Circles, led reading groups in order to develop their fluency and comprehension, and worked one-on-one with some students who were falling behind in their development in reading and math.  I provided the students with activities that allowed them to work with Thesaurus’ in writing poetry and recreating stories.  I used the DRTA format to introduce new books that corresponded with the Social Studies curriculum.  I practiced assessing students’ reading levels using the WRI and ERSI assessment instruments.  I helped students with art and music, and assisted my cooperating teacher as much as possible.

Summer Workshop:  ASU, Boone, NC, Summer 2000.  I attended a summer Music Workshop presented by Silver Burdett Ginn where I participated in many activities and classes that helped increase my library of activities and ideas to integrate into the regular classroom.  I met lots of wonderful people from across the country who came to share and retrieve ideas with others.  I learned that music could be used as a motivator, an opener, for any lesson.  Music is fun and intriguing.  I plan to use music in my regular classroom to peak students’ interest in the curriculum and to give them some fun in the midst of learning.  I also attended a Classroom Management course during this workshop.  In this course, I learned ways to manage my classroom when I am using music.

CI 2800 class at ASU, Boone NC, Fall 1999.  Cooperating School:  Hardin Park Elementary, Boone, NC.  In this class at ASU, I worked with a Kindergarten student once a week after school.  During this time, we played math games on a computer.  I helped this student develop math skills (specifically addition and subtraction), as well as, computer skills.  We also worked some with his spelling words for the week.  We did art projects such as drawing and coloring.  And we played with Legos and went outside for nature walks.  My main goal for this class was to learn about the Kindergarten age level and become comfortable working with kids at this level.

Summer Bible school at Oxford Memorial Baptist Church, Alexander County, NC, 1997-present.  In Bible school I have worked with kids from the ages between two and seventeen.  I plan lessons, activities, teach, and motivate these students.  I work with handicapped and disabled children, mentally challenged children, and those who are academically gifted.
