Experiences

Internship, Mabel Elementary School, Zionville, NC, Spring 2002.  Cooperating teacher: Mrs. Patsy Alley.  During this experience, I observed, assisted, and taught students in Kindergarten.  I taught the calendar lesson every morning and I assisted working and helping the children as they worked on activities on their own.  I helped Mrs. Alley prepare the classroom for the lessons that she taught as well as learning her way of organization, which I found very important.  I gained a lot of knowledge, wonderful ideas, and had a great experience during my internship.  I also taught a math lesson that introduced the children to subtraction and a number sentence.  I used a fun book called Ten Little Monkeys: A counting book that introduced subtraction to the class.  I then had the class act out the book and I used the monkeys to show the children what "taking away" means.  After the children became comfortable with this, I had them do a worksheet that I could use to assess their learning.  I handed each child a bag with six candy bananas (runts) and had the children place them on the basket.  They had four number sentences that told them how many bananas to feed the monkeys and they learned to subtract through this activity.  I also read aloud to the children each day during story time.  This was very helpful because I got a lot of practice talking aloud to the children and I got to be on a personal level with them during this time.  I participated in grading their work and I became familiar with the pocket pals, which is a very creative and easy way for Mrs. Alley to communicate with each child's parent every night.  During Kindergarten Orientation I helped prepare and I did some assessments with them.  This was a good experience because I realized how much the Kinders learn up to this point in the school year.

Fifth Dimension, Cove Creek Elementary, Boone, NC, Fall 1999.  During this experience, I worked with a kindergarten child in an after school program working with educational computer software. This program was designed to get kids involved both technologically and academically. The main focus was a large maze that was created by the interns each semester and provided for the kids, motivation, to move forward. They picked software and we as the interns provided assistance when needed, to help them grasp the content at hand. At the end of every session, I wrote field notes, documenting everything that happened that day as well as what I learned from each visit.

Girl Scout Troop Leader, Green Valley Elementary School, Boone NC, school years of 1999-2000 and 2000-2001.  During this experience I had a group of about ten girls who attended Green Valley Elementary School.  I would go after school and prepare lessons and projects to help the children earn badges.  We did a lot of extra activities such as lock- ins, selling cookies, and camping trips.  I got to know this group of girls very well and I was actually teaching in a fun and laid back environment.

Swim Lessons Instructor/ Lifeguard 1997-current.  I do this year round and really enjoy it.  I have been involved with swimming since I can remember and I think that it is very important for children to learn.  I have taught many classes that consisted of twelve kids as well as private lessons.  This has given me many opportunities to meet lots of children and teach while doing something that I enjoy.
