Experience
Internship, Mabel Elementary School, Zionville,
NC, Spring 2002. Cooperating teacher: Mrs. Tamara Stamey. During this experience,
I observed, assisted, and taught students at the first grade level. I taught
and assessed my own reading group that consisted of low children and carried
an entire unit on Measurement, utilizing the Investigation’s books that
were provided through the school. With the math, I taught the class in
three different groups and had to learn how to manage both my time as well
as stay organized. I read allowed as well worked with the children on shared
writing and word wall. I participated in all grading and clerical work.
I became familiar with field trips and what it takes to have success with
one. I also made use of the DRTA, WRI and ERSI assessment instruments to
determine the instructional level of my students.
Fifth Dimension, Blowing Rock Elementary, Blowing Rock, NC, Fall, 2000. During this experience, I worked with two kindergarten children in an after school program working with educational computer software. This program was started to get kids involved both technologically and academically. The main focus was a large maze that was created by the interns each semester and provided for the kids, motivation, to move forward. They picked software and we as the interns provided assistance when needed, to help them grasp the content at hand. At the end of every session, I wrote field notes, documenting everything that happened that day as well as what I learned from each visit.
Camp Counselor, St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Charlotte NC, Summers of 1998, 1999, 2000. During this experience, I worked with ages 5-13. This camp experience provided these children with a place to go during the summer that had structured activities and well as educational tie-ins. We as counselors, picked a subject a week to focus on and do mini- lessons to keep their brains working, even in summer. I assisted the children on many field trips, games and outdoor activities.
Administrative Assistant, Belk Library, Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, January 1999-May 2001. During this experience, I worked in the administrative office, doing clerical work for the university librarian. I answered phones, created memos, attended team meetings, and planned office functions/parties.
Lab Assistant, Belk Library, Appalachian State University, Boone, NC, August 2001- January 2002. During this experience, I worked in the computer lab answering questions and fixing computers.
