Duration: one ? two 45 minute sessions.
Description: This lesson gets kids thinking about all of the difficulties in creating a new colony.
Goals: To allow the students to see the difficulties that the original settlers of the 13 colonies had in creating a colony that would please everyone.
Objectives:
1. The students will be able to create a list of six criteria for their
own new colony.
2. The students will be able to discuss, in groups, all of the different
things that each member would like to include in their colony.
3.The students will be able to create a visual representation in the
form of a poster of their new colony.
4.The students will be able to decide between only three of each person's
criteria to be placed in the colony.
5.The students will gain a better understanding of the difficulties
there were in creating a new colony that all would be happy with.
Materials: posterboard, paper, pencils, markers, crayons.
Procedure:
1. Introduce lesson by giving a brief overview of what they will be
learning about in this chapter.
2. Pass out slips of paper numbered 1?6.
3. Ask children to think about the types of things they would like
to have if they had the opportunity to create a new place to live.
4. Have the children write six things that they would include in their
own colony.
