Focus and Review
Talk about the alphabet and how the alphabet creates words. Today the
students are going to identify letters that are in words given to them.
By the end of the class, the students will begin recognizing words.
Statement of Objectives
Competency Goal 1: The learner will develop and apply enabling
strategies and skills to read and write. Competency Goal 2:
The learner will develop and apply strategies and skills to comprehend
text that is read, heard, and viewed. Competency Goal 4: The
learner will apply strategies and skills to create oral, written, and visual
texts. Competency Goal 5: The learner will apply grammar and
language conventions to communicate effectively.
Teacher Input
The teacher will start off by reading "The Giving Tree." The class
will then discuss the book. Next, the teacher will bring out a hat with
letters of the alphabet in it. Each student will pick a letter. The teacher
will go around the room and ask questions. For example: 1) What is your
letter? 2) Name a word that begins with your letter. 3) What is the letter
beside of you that your classmate is holding? 4) Name a word with that
letter. The students will continue to draw letters out of the hat and repeat
the process.
Guided Practice
The teacher will take the students to the computer lab where they will
be introduced to the software program Reader Rabbit 1. The teacher will
