Section Three: 61-90
Your job is to write down questions that your group can talk about.
Be sure to start your questions with words like, Who, What, When, Why,
How, Tell, Where, and Describe.
(The Logan children are afraid of the "night men" because they have caused the bus to stop running and they think that the night men are coming to get them. They have every reason to believe that the men will come because night men were the ones who burned up the Berrys. During this time in history many African-Americans were tortured by white men who were a part of the Klu Klux Klan. The night men do end up driving up to their house, but they do not enter or disturb the Logans.)
2.Character
In the previous sections the character of Cassie has appeared to be
bold and daring-not afraid of anything. What do you find to be abnormal
about Cassie's character in the very beginning of this section? Why
does she act differently? Can you site specific passages that speak
of this difference in character?
(Cassie is abnormal in this section because she is terrified of the night men. She does not try to stand up to them or talk back to them-this is quite unlike the previous actions of Cassie. She acts differently because she knows the what the nightmen did to the Berry's and she has learned that white people can be very cruel and do not care about African-Americans. Some specific passages showing Cassie's fear are: p. 66: par.3, par.6---p.67: par.2, par.6----p. 68 par. 1)
3. Point of View
From Mama's point of view, why do you think she whipped Stacey and
let T.J. go free without any punishment (on page 81)?
(I think that Mama gave Stacey a chance to tell on
T.J. and he did not choose to do so. From Mama's point of view she
could not let Stacey go unpunished when he would not say if the notes were
his or T.J.'s. I think she did not want the other students to think
that Stacey was special because he was her son. I also believe she
wanted to show the rest of the class what would happen if they cheated
and she might have hoped that T.J. would confess when he saw her about
to whip Stacey.)

the character wants to do in this section.
