    Descriptive

    Page 10-- Faith's eye's- her sobs.

This passage shows how much Faith loves Josefina.  She is crying because she cannot take her pet with her on the move out west.  Faith's mom is sad too because she cannot take some her things on the trip too.

Why does Faith's family have to leave some items behind?

Answer:  there is not enough room in the wagon that they will be traveling in to California.

    Simile/ Metaphor

Page 15  Early in- it beautiful.

The passage tells about the wagon and what it looked like.  There is a metaphor to describe it (a flowerpot on wheels).  Also blue trim and a white cloth roof.  It gives the reader a visual picture of the wagon.

Why does the author describe the wagon as a flowerpot?

Page 29  At night- banjo music.

This passage tells about life on the wagon trail.  It gives history and tells about how the people lived while they were traveling west.  This is a part of U.S. history and how the United States expanded westward.

What did the people do at night on the wagon trail?

    Funny/Amusing

Page 32  Josefina was- after her.

What did the cows do when Josefina scared them?

Answer:  The cows kicked and mooed.

    Authors purpose:  to entertain

Write a paragraph about this question and be sure to include who or what your connection is about, where and when it happened, what happened, and how it connects or deals with the part of the story you were reading.

I have a dog and her name is Lady.  I love her very much.  Last summer when we went to the beach, I wanted to take Lady with us.  My Mom and Dad said "No way, she will mess things up and cause problems!."  I was very sad when they said this.  I knew that Lady would be lonely without us at home.  Also, she would be upset if she had to stay at the vet.  I knew that the whole time we were at the beach, I would worry about her.  I decided to ask again.  It took some convincing, but I finally made Mom and Dad see it my way.  Lady went to the beach and had a great time.  She was very well behaved and did not cause any problems.   I hope that Lady can go with us again next year.  Lady is like Josefina in the story.  Josefina was not going to get to move with her family out west.  Her owner, Faith, finally convinced her dad to let Josefina go.  I am glad that Lady and Josefina got to go with their families.
