Summary:
Faith and her family have decided to move West.  Faith has a pet hen named Josefina.  She wants to take Josefina with her but her Dad says no.  She finally convinces him to let her go with them.  While they are traveling, Josefina causes some trouble.  She upsets the animals, she falls out of the wagon, and is almost traded to the Indians.  She does some good things too.  Josefina starts laying eggs again and saves the family from robbers.  The trip is very hard on everybody.  Josefina was old at the beginning of the book, and at the end when the family reaches their new land, Josefina dies.
