Point of View

• From whose point of view is Skylark written?  Answer:  Skylark is written from Anna's point of view.  I know this because she uses "I" when talking to Caleb.  pg. 6, para. 4-8

• Toward the end of this section, Papa thinks there might be some rain on the horizon to the west.  (pg. 16). Which of the following emotions best describes Papa's mood in this section.

Answer:  3.  Papa seems hopeful that rain will soon come because there are rain clouds on the horizon.

Personification

1.  pg. 7; para. 2
2.  "...and ice sat slick on the windows."
3.  I choose this passage because it is personification.  As I read this passage, I had a mental picture of a little ice man sitting on the window sill.
4.  If you were ask to draw a picture of this example of personification, describe what your picture would look like?  My picture would have a large window with four panes of glass.  The ice man would be sitting on the top left pane with his legs crossed.  The ice man has on a light blue shirt and blue pants.  He has a gray face with long white hair slicked back and blending in with his white mustache.  The ice man is shivering due to the cold temperature he stays all of the time.
5.  The Author's purpose in this passage is to describe the changing seasons to the reader and also let the reader know what impact each season change has on the prairie.
 

Simile

1.  pg. 18, last two lines
2.  "Her face....winter moon."
3.  This passage is a simile that describes the color of Moonbeam's face.  I choose this passage because it is descriptive and helps me make a mental picture of Moonbeam.
4.  What is Moonbeam's face being compared to in this passage?  A winter moon.
5. The Author's purpose in this passage is to inform the reader of the color of Moonbeam's face.

Your job is to draw some kind of picture related to this section.  It can be a sketch, cartoon, diagram, or stick figure scene.  You can draw a picture of something that's discussed specifically in your book, something that the reading reminded you of, or a picture that shows any idea or feeling you got from the reading.  After finishing your picture, write a descriptive paragraph about your drawing.  Your paragraph should include:

• who or what the picture is about.
• where the picture takes place (setting).
• when it is happening.
• why you drew this picture.

Descriptive Paragraph

• This picture is my interpretation of Caleb writing "SARA" on the ground.  I think Caleb is trying very hard to make Sarah feel she's a part of the prairie.  Papa had just said their names were written on the prairie because they were born there so Caleb writes Sarah's name on the prairie so she won't have to leave either.  This is happening during the time of the drought.  Papa is afraid that the lack of rain is going to result in everything drying up.  As a result of the drought, they may have to leave if things get bad enough.  I drew this picture because this particular passage stands out in my head from this section.  In this passage, I relate to Caleb's efforts to make Sarah feel included and want to stay with them on the prairie, no matter what.
