    I think she included it to set the mood for the passage that follows.  The following passage is filled with confusion
    and sadness.

    The passage is describing a helicopter.
Why did the author include this passage in the story?
    The author uses this metaphor to give us a very clear visual image in our heads of what Mila was seeing.  She was
    also using language that Mila would really use.

This passage is also a metaphor because it compares two things using like or as.
Thinking Question:  Is a promise considered a good thing in this passage?
    Yes, a promise is a  good thing since it is compared to a dolphin.  Mila loves her dolphin friends and is
    therefore seeing the promise as a positive thing.
Why did the author include this passage in the story?
    The author uses this metaphor because it is a likely comparison that Mila would use. People compare what they know
    and Mila knows dolphins.

First two words: We all  Last two words: home sometimes
This passage is a thought invoking passage because I think it is very profound. It gives us a look into Mila's thinking
without her actually having to tell us that she is sad and misses her home.
Thinking Question:  Have you ever been nostalgic for you home?  How did you feel while away?  Did you adjust?
    I was homesick when I went to camp one year.  I was really sad, but I adjusted and ended up having a great time.
Why did the author use this passage in the story?
    I think it was included to help us better understand Mila and how sad she is about being away from home.
