The airplane represents evil.  It is evil that destroys the innocence and purity of nature.

Have you ever had the experience of using something for the first time like Mila did on page 23?
Putting on a bathing suit for the first time would be strange, especially when you had always been naked.  I remember the first time I wore pantyhose.  It was so uncomfortable and binding.  I couldn't understand why anyone would ever wear such horrible and uncomfortable clothing.  I have adjusted to them now and learned they are not so bad, but I sure do remember that first time.

What does family mean to you?  Are friends a part of your family?
On page 33, Mila refers to Sandy as her family.  To me, family is someone or a group of people you care deeply for.  You feel attachments to family and are happy for their successes.

1 Question About Author's Style

Why does the author not always use correct grammar when showing the thoughts of Mila?  An example is on page 22.  The author says, "Here are picture of a girl getting reading to swim."
I think the incorrect grammar is used because it wants to show Mila has not mastered the English language yet.  Hesse wants to give you a primitive feeling as you read.

On page 24, Mila jumps in the water and says it smells bad and tastes bad.  Why did she not like this water?
It was pool water with chlorine and she is use to salt water with only natural substances in it.
