Point of View
From whom's perspective is Phoenix
Rising written? (Who is telling the
story?)
Answer... Phoenix Rising is written from Nyle's point of view. Nyle, the main character, is the narrator of the story. I know this because beginning on page 1, paragraph 1, Nyle narrates what she is doing ... "I winged a stone towards the woods," as well as the reason why she does what she does, "I had no wish to hurt the dog, only to chase him off." This continues throughout the book.
Cause and Effect
Effect: Mrs. Miriam
Trent and Ezra come and live with Gran and
Nyle. (p. 16)
What causes Mrs. Miriam Trent and
Ezra to come and live with Gran and
Nyle?
Answer... Cause: Mrs. Trent and Ezra were evacuated from Cookshire the morning after the nuclear accident. They had no place to go. No home. No money. Gran, Nyle's grandmother, decides to let some evacuees stay with them. Consequently, the Trents move in with Gran and Nyle (p. 17).
Setting
Where and when does
Phoenix
Rising take place?
Answer... The story takes place on Gran and Nyle's farm in North Haversham (p. 6), during the month of November (p. 4), after the radiation accident in the nuclear power plant in Cookshire (p. 16).
