Problem/Solution
What problem does Duma encounter while
hunting for food?
-
A 500 pound lioness takes her first
catch, a young wildebeest, and Duma is too small to fight her (pg 6 - "But
all the commotion has caught. . .").
Figurative Language
Find an example of a metaphor or a simile,
explain how you know which one it is, and explain what it means.
-
"Duma glides, as smooth as a shadow,
through the grass" (pg 4). I know this is a simile because of the usage
of the word "as." It means that Duma walked quietly and carefully through
the grass, trying not to disturb anything.
Sequence
List the order of events in which Duma
attempts to catch her pray.
-
She quietly walks in the grass, and
tells her cubs to wait (pg 3). She listens for the sounds of the wildebeests
(pg 4). She runs full speed toward them. She catches a young calf
(pg 5). Then a lioness comes and takes the wildebeest from her, leaving
Duma with nothing (pg 6).
Setting
When and Where does the story take place?
-
The story takes place in the month
of May on an open, grassy plain in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park (pg
1). The story begins in the morning and progresses through the day (pg
2).
Italics/Quotations/Parentheses
Find 2 words that are either in italics,
quotations, or parentheses, and explain why you think they are written
this way.
-
"kopje" (pg 7); This word is in quotations
because it is unfamiliar to the reader and needs to be explained. The word
is defined through the context as a "rock formation" (pg 7).
acacia
(pg 9); This word's pronunciation is written in parentheses after it is
used. Through the context, it can be determined that an acacia is a type
of tree.
