Grizzly bears got their name - some say - because
of their appearance. Any animal that has 42 large teeth and weighs
800 pounds is bound to portray somewhat of a vicious appearance.
Their long canine teeth are meant for ripping and tearing and their long
claws, some up to 5 inches long, are meant for grabbing and catching their
prey, and they will protect their young to the death. Though there
are only about 30,000 grizzlies alive in the world today, they once roamed
the northwestern United States and Canada by the score. Grizzlies
regularly eat both plants and meat, and sometimes their favorite meals
come from the food stash of nearby campers. Actually, grizzlies are
not very fond of humans, or even of other bears - for that matter.
Grizzlies usually will keep to themselves unless it is time to mate, but
other than that they are "wilderness loners." They are also very
unpredictable in their behavior. What one grizzly does today, he
may not do next week; and all grizzlies are said to have their own personalities,
so it is hard to generalize how any given grizzly will behave in a certain
situation.
