Adventurous:  Although adventure isn't his main motivation for moving west, he does plan on overcoming obstacles. (page 23, paragraph 4)
Confident: Walter is sure that he and his family can have a successful farm in the harsh Dakota Territory.  (page 23, paragraph 6)
Serious: He means what he says about leaving the South and the war behind.  (page 15, paragraphs 8 through 10)

GOAL
To find a new start and make sure that history doesn't repeat itself for his sons.

PROBLEM
His memories of the war fought in the South haunt him.

SOLUTION
He plans to leave the family farm to try to get rid of the memories.
