CHARACTER TRAITS

1. Trait: Caring-page 17, paragraph 3 to page 19, paragraph 2

(explanation or proof of trait)
-Almanzo is caring to the animals in the barn.  He feeds them, cleans up after them, and comforts them.

(Quote that proves trait:)
    "He would always be quiet, and gentle, and patient...He just touched their velvety noses...Almanzo took pitchforks and went from stall to stall, cleaning out the soiled hay underfoot, and spreading fresh hay from the mangers to make clean beds for the cows and the oxen and the calves and the sheep...Almanzo took two carrots from the cows' feed-box, and snapped little pieces off them, and fed the pieces one by one to Star and Bright."

2. Trait: Impatient-page 24, paragraph 2 to page 25, paragraph 2

(explanation or proof of trait)
-Almanzo is impatient because he wants to eat before supper time because he is so hungry.

(Quote that proves trait:)
    "One of the pies was cut, and a little piece of crust was temptingly broken off; it would never be missed...One little bite couldn't spoil a supper.  He was starving, and they wouldn't let him eat anything until they had put it on the table."

3. Trait: Worried-page 40, paragraph 6-7

-Almanzo is worried that his teacher, Mr. Corse will be beaten up by the BIG boys in his class at school.

    "But maybe they'll kill him!...Almanzo couldn't help saying again:  It isn't fair.  He can't fight all five of them."



CHARACTER GOAL

-Almanzo's goal is to do well, do his best, and be obedient to his parents.



PROBLEM

-Almanzo is scared of what will happen while he is at school.  He wonders what will happen to both his teacher, Mr. Corse, the BIG boys.



SOLUTION OR POSSIBLE SOLUTION

-Almanzo is surprised at school.  He never remembered his lesson, but he felt uneasy about being at school.  Mr. Corse gives the BIG boys a "thrashing" with a whip.
