Word Wizard Example


Word One

1. convinced (page 7, paragraph 1)
2. "No wandering eyes Wilbert Jackson, she said and ever since then Wilbert has been
    convinced that Miss McEwing is a witch."
3. verb - Trying to get someone to believe something
4. To persuade by argument or proof
5. Through the stoy we learn that Wilbert is very smart, but might show us that he is
    sometimes gulible.



Word Two

1. hinder (page 11, paragraph 3)
2. "Mamma just sits there and says, Alice are you here to help or hinder 'cause I ain't abiding
    any hinderers right now."
3. verb - Bothering someone
4. To cause delay or difficulty in completing something
5. The word shows us that during this time people were very hard workers and they did not
    have time for anyone to bug them or slow down the process.



Word Three

1. shanghaied (page 14, paragraph 1)
2. "May Amelia, you look like you've been shanghaied!"
3. verb - To be overtook by something
4. To induce or compel someone to do something especially by fraud or force
5. It shows that May Amelia looked like she had been forced into doing work, because she
    so filthy.
 



Word Four

1. sisu (page 18, paragraph 6)
2. "He always tells me that I have sisu, which is Finnish for guts, and that I can do anything."
3. noun - Having guts
4. Finnish for guts
5. This tells that May Amelia is very strongwilled and can do whatever she puts her mind to.



Word Five

1. potbelly (page 6, paragraph 1)
2. "Miss McEwing even lets us take off our wet clothes and sit by the potbelly stove to dry
    off when the weather is bad which is almost always it seems."
3. adjective - fat and wide stove
4. A short rounded stove in which wood or coal is burned
5. It gives the reader a mental picture of what they used for heat in the schools during this
    time period.
