              The Whitmans where the first to travel the Oregon Trail for the purpose of trying to Christianize the Cayuse Indians
              They had a scarcity of food and therefore many died of hunger or disease.  Their huts were rude and ill fitted to bear the inclemency of winter.  There was a toll placed on most land passages, so the pioneers found it difficult to complete their journey.
