Discussion Director

Today you will be Discussion Director for your literature group.You should come up with good thinking questions for your group.Make sure your questions are important to the section and involve more than just finding the answer in the book.With your questions you should include the answers and the page numbers and paragraph where the answers can be found.This will make it easier for you and your group members during discussion, if problems should arise.You should have a MCEOG, True/False, and descriptive question.Also, ask two other questions about setting, point of view, or main idea..

Passage Picker

Your job as Passage Picker will be to mark or identify passages in the book as you read.Give the page number and paragraph that you wish to share with the group.Write down the first and last two words of the passage and then explain the type of passage it is and why.At the end of your role, include some questions.

        Look for the following types of passages in your reading:

        1.)Problem/Solution

        2.)Informative

        3.)Thematic

        4.)Cause/Effect 

        5.)Descriptive

Character Sketcher

When reading you will create your own images of what the people and places in the story look like.This job will give you the opportunity to illustrate on paper what you think a character looks like to share with your group.Along with your drawing you should include three traits that the character possesses and the page number and paragraph that supports the trait you pick.Then, include the character’s goal, and if there is one, a problem and solution.

Word Wizard

As Word Wizard you have an important job of finding words in the book that are difficult and that you or your group may not know.You should find at least five words, which you will list and give the page number and paragraph for each.Then, you will write the sentence where you found the word, what you think the word means and the definition.On an index card draw a picture that shows what the word means and then on the other side write the word, definition, page number and paragraph.

Summarizer

As your group reads the story it is important that they understand the story and notice the details and major points of the story.As summarizer you can help the other group members get a complete understanding of the story.  Retell the story in your own words by capturing the main ideas and situations in the story. Here is an example of how to do the role as summarizer.

The Bunyans

The Bunyansis a story that’s introduces the reader to the family life of Paul Bunyan.Paul not only had his blue ox Babe, but a wife and two kids, too!Paul met his wife in a cave when she was trying to find her wishbone.She became Mrs. Bunyan after she agreed to marry him and share his wishbone.Both of them are giants and their kids were big people too!Carrie was the mom’s name and their children were called Little Jean and Teeny.The adventures that they got into created the famous landforms that most Americans are familiar with.For instance, Teeny spilt syrup in her hair and as a way to get it out she used a shower of powerful water, which we now call Niagara Falls. Little Jean had his hand in helping create tourist attractions also.When he went to work with his dad he played and formed Bryce Canyon.Paul Bunyan’s children we not ordinary children!They both gave their parents a lot to talk about and be amazed with.They rode on whales and the waves of oceans and rivers.Big Ma Bunyan also changed nature to help make it how we know it today.When the family was camping Big Ma was washing dishes and had poked so many holes in the ground that the result was the geyser Old Faithful.Ma and Pa Bunyan ended up retiring and the children well, they became adults and went off to school and bigger and better things.Just look around and you are bound to see something that was touched by the hands of the big Bunyan’s
