The trip begins at Camp Green Lake. Stanley decides to steal a truck and take off to find Zero. Although the truck idea fails, Stanley still takes off in the direction of God’s Thumb across the lake (page 147-148). Holes dug from long ago line the lakebed in every direction (page 150). He walks until he sees in the distance a shape. It is an overturned boat. There he finds Zero (page 154). Together they head off in the direction of God’s Thumb in the mountains, beyond the edge of the lake (page 159). When they got to the end of the lake, they had to climb out, almost, as they describe it, like climbing out of a frying pan (page 164). They walked for a while before they started climbing up the mountain towards the thumb (page 167). Because Zero is so weak, Stanley carries him the rest of the way up the mountain (page 170-171). Their journey ends in the shadow of the thumb where they find water and onions and shelter in God’s Thumb.
