When Esperanza first moves to the United States she is faced with meeting new people and making new friends.  When I first went to school I had to make new friends and meet new people.  Some of the new people I met were nice to me like Isabel was to Esperanza, but some of the people were mean to me and treated me unkindly, similarly to the way Marta treated Esperanza.
