Esperanza has led an extravagant life full of luxuries reserved for only the rich.  Esperanza's father does not meet her one day as he had promised because he had been killed by un bandito.  Tio Louis, Esperanza's powerful and corrupt uncle, asked Esperanza's mother to marry him.  When Esperanza's mother refused Tio's marriage proposal he burnt down their ranch and vineyards.  Since one of Esperanza's Uncles is a banker and her other uncle is the mayor, they have a huge influence over Esperanza's village, and non of the town's people are willing to help out Esperanza's family.  Esperanza's mother is only left with two choices marry Tio or run, so she chooses to run.
