Alignment to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study
 
 

Launch: Read the first chapter aloud to the class.  Have the students examine the cover, consider what you have read, and predict what the story will be about.  Start a prediction chart to keep track of the students predictions and the actual outcomes of the story.  You can choose to continue this activity throughout the novel and have the track the events of the story through their prediction chart.
